By Pete Lane, 8:00 am on

The holidays are a time of gathering with friends and loved ones, sharing stories and catching up over delicious family feasts. However, some of the holiday’s classic dishes are packed with fat and sodium which can threaten the health and wellness of your senior guests. Whether you provide care at home for aging parents or are hosting this year’s holiday celebrations, we invite you to check out our delicious recipe for healthy sweet potato fries. Along with being a great side dish, they pack a nutritional punch and can be enjoyed by the handful!

Ingredients

5 medium sweet potatoes
2 to 3 tbsp. olive oil
1 tsp. brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. cumin

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Wash the sweet potatoes or peel them if you prefer skinless fries. Slice them into sticks, about a half an inch wide. Toss the fries in a bowl with enough olive oil to coat them. Add the brown sugar, salt chili powder and cumin. Toss the fries again to evenly distribute the seasonings. Place the fries in a single layer on a cookie sheet and place in the oven. Bake for 30-45 minutes, depending on thickness and how crisp you want them. Check on them regularly and turn the sweet potatoes over halfway through baking or once the bottoms brown.

The Health Benefits for Seniors

The sweet potato is one of the best sources of beta carotene, an antioxidant that improves the senior immune system and lowers the risk of illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. The sweet potato is also packed with nutrients including potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium and manganese. This low-sodium, low-fat veggie also provides dietary fiber which can help to regulate digestion.

Sweet potatoes reach peak season during the fall and winter, so it’s no surprise it’s a popular choice during the holidays. Whether baked, incorporated into a casserole or turned into a healthier version of French fries, sweet potatoes are sure to add flavor, color and fun to any holiday table.
